Selling an investment that's down to realize the loss on paper, then using that loss to offset gains elsewhere, which cuts the tax bill. Losses beyond your gains can offset up to $3,000 of regular income a year, with the rest carrying forward. The catch is the wash-sale rule: buy the same or a 'substantially identical' investment within 30 days before or after the sale and the loss is disallowed.
