Using borrowed money to control more of an investment than your cash alone would buy. Margin loans at a broker, leveraged ETFs that aim for two or three times an index's daily move, options and futures, and a mortgage on a rental property are all forms. Gains and losses both scale with the borrowed amount; the loan and its interest don't shrink when the asset does.
