Cash a company pays out to shareholders from its profits, usually quarterly. The yield is the annual dividend divided by the share price. On the day a dividend is paid, the share price drops by about that amount; the money moved from the company's account to yours. In a taxable account, 'qualified' dividends are taxed at the lower capital-gains rates; others at regular income rates.
